Do You Have High Estrogen Levels?

Supplements to support estrogen excess.

Do you suspect high estrogen levels may be responsible for a lot of your health concerns? Here I will guide you through some of the natural supplements that I recommend to treat estrogen excess.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

When looking at estrogen excess in the body, the first place you should look is the liver, and how well it is functioning. Overall exposure to toxins can cause an overwhelm on the liver, which can lead to a buildup of estrogen and its metabolites. This is why, when you are looking to move estrogen out of the body you need to support liver detoxification pathways.

Another way to support estrogen detoxification is through the production of bile, bile acts as a soap in the body, it does this by turning fat soluble compounds such as estrogen into something that the body can excrete much more easily. Bile helps eliminate: hormones, toxins, hydrocarbons, food additives, aspartame, parasites, fungi, and yeast.

YOUR LIVER PATHWAYS

The liver to put it simply is one big chemical reaction, it requires different pathways to detox different substances. A simple way to look at this is understanding the liver requires input; this can be in the form of nutrients, that help support how it functions. We then have an action, this action is the chemical reaction required to break down those toxic substances that can cause harm to our body. We then require output, output is the removal of those toxic substances. If you do not have the nutrients required for input then the other processes within the liver will not work as efficiently, this is where you get partially processed compounds that can cause harm to our body.

The pathways that help support detoxification in the liver include: glutathione conjugation, methylation, sulfation, and glucuronidation. These pathways help breakdown substances like hydrocarbons, smoke, pollution, drugs and our hormones.

SUPPLEMENTS TO USE

Here are my favourite supplements to use to support your liver, gallbladder and optimal estrogen clearance. To help balance and cleanse.

Calcium D-Glucarate (CDG)

CDG supports glucuronidation, and the excretion of environmental toxins. CDG supports the liver in breaking down substances such as painkillers, bilirubin, estrogen and steroids. This makes it great for reducing the signs of estrogen dominance. Also consider if you have a family history of cancer, had a cancer scare, irregular pap smear, breast lumps, endometriosis, or fibroids.

Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C)

I3C provides the body with the precursor used to create cytochrome P450 enzymes, that the liver needs to break down estrogens. I3C is found naturally in broccoli and cabbage.

Glutathione

Glutathione is an antioxidant used in the liver to support glutathione conjugation; the primary liver pathway used to metabolize estrogen. It is also an important pathway in the excretion of toxins from pollution. Liposomal glutathione is far better absorbed than simply glutathione.

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)

If you have digestive conditions such as SIBO, fructose malabsorption, parasite, or candida, I would recommend instead of glutathione use NAC. NAC will gently help your body create glutathione.

Sulforaphane

Sulforaphane is naturally found in broccoli and broccoli sprouts, it enhances the action of glutathione, it is also an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It supports the liver pathways sulfation, methylation and glutathione conjunction.

SAMe

SAMe is a sulfur based nutrient that helps support glutathione production, and also helps the liver make bile salts; making SAMe wonderful if you have gallbladder issues, liver issues, low moods, depression and estrogen dominance.

Glycine

Glycine is an amino acid. It’s found in high amounts in hydrolyzed collagen which is found in bone broth, and can also be found in protein powders. Glycine helps in the production of glutathione, in return this helps glutathione conjugation.

B Vitamin Complex

The liver requires B vitamins for the breakdown of many toxic substances, including our hormones. It’s important to provide an excess of these vitamins, as B vitamins play a primary role in supporting the input required for the liver to function properly, if you do not have enough of these B vitamins, your liver will prioritize the metabolism of other substances and you will have an excess of estrogen.

The process of working out what is causing your estrogen dominance and the process of determining the right supplements is very complex and requires an individualized program. I recommend before starting any new supplement regime, booking a consultation.
