Have you heard of dry skin brushing for your hormones, detoxification and general wellbeing? Dry skin brushing might be a simple habit, but it has a lot to offer in just a few minutes per day.

What is dry skin brushing?

Dry skin brushing is when you use a bristled brush to brush over your whole body. This process removes dead skin cells and you’ll often experience a tingly feeling that leaves you feeling invigorated.

There are many benefits to dry skin brushing, but the biggest in my experience is the lymphatic benefits.

Common signs of lymphatic issues

How do you know your lymphatic system needs a little extra support in the first place? Some of the most common signs of lymphatic congestion include:

  • High cholesterol
  • Weight gain/excess fatty tissue
  • Cellulite
  • Swelling
  • Fibrosis
  • Vasculitis
  • Issues with the ovaries and other internal organs
  • Lipomas
  • Skin conditions
  • Immune conditions – the lymphatics play a big role in viral and bacterial infections!
  • Frequent flu, coughs and colds
  • Swollen lymph glands are swollen
  • Recurring sore throat

How dry skin brushing can help

The lymphatic system is similar to your circulatory system, but with one key difference – it doesn’t have a pump. Instead, it relies on muscle movement to pump it manually.

Although we have many deep lymphatics, a good amount of the lymphatic system is situated just below the skin.

Using a dry skin brush helps because when you press the bristles to the skin, it helps to move fluid in the right direction through the lymphatic system. This is particularly useful for people who are sedentary, have a chronic illness, or are even in the hospital.

Other simple ways to support your lymphatic system

Dry skin brushing is a great option to support your lymphatics. But what else can you do?

  • Stay well hydrated – the more hydrated you are, the better your lymphatic system will function
  • Include potassium-rich foods such as celery and cucumber – these help to counteract fluid imbalances caused by too much sodium
  • Mobilise through stretching – this is particularly useful if you have hormonal issues. Stretches and twists through the abdominal area can mobilise the deeper lymphatics, which helps to remove excess hormones via the lymph.
  • Try facial gua sha – there isn’t much research on this method yet. However, it does feel fantastic, and it’s likely to help move lymph through the system, which can also reduce puffiness.
  • Get a massage – whether it’s DIY, from your partner or a professional, regular massage can help to mobilise lymph.
